Transpersonal Psychotherapy, also known as Transpersonal Psychology, is a spiritual form of psychotherapy which emerged in the 60s via Abraham Maslow and Victor Frankl. It was also influenced by the work of Carl Jung. The fundamental principle of this approach relates to the name, ‘transpersonal’ which means ‘beyond the personal’, valuing the spiritual and transcendent aspect of humans.
Transpersonal psychotherapy comes from the humanistic tradition of psychology. It aims to delve into the depth of individuals by exploring human growth and facilitating contact with the part of us that lives beyond the ego. It is underpinned by an integration of world spiritual teachings and contemporary psychology.
This approach attempts to free our true essence, facilitating and encouraging human growth toward transcendence of obstructions that limit human potential, for example due to a mental health condition. Transpersonal therapy pays attention to the whole person, that is, our spiritual, social, emotional, intellectual, physical, and creative parts.
This means we can heal and grow and feel more complete, with a more comprehensive understanding of ourselves, our abilities, and relationships. And learn useful skills to navigate these areas more optimally, strengthening our internal abilities for powerful and long-lasting change. This approach values personal development, healing, and growth as parts of the actualising process, because as Maslow himself believed:
Our experiences, actions, creativity, and altruism are not found in our personality, they must be excavated from our essence.
Our Transpersonal therapists will help you learn about your internal resources and see yourself as a part of your process toward growth and improved living.
The therapeutic relationship is regarded a means for change so is especially important to transpersonal therapists, and will therefore be a point of focus for the work. So your therapist will attempt to foster a relationship of equality, so it won’t feel like there is an imbalance of power.
They will utilise their empathic skills to connect with you, guide and encourage insight, and remain present, authentic, open-minded, respectful, curious, and view what you bring as new, and unique to you, whilst remaining aware of themselves. This is the climate in which they will facilitate healing and growth. Transpersonal therapy sessions are 50 minutes and normally take place at the same time and day each week.
Transpersonal Therapy can help clients learn about themselves in the context of many problems, this can lead to improvement with self-esteem, depression, anxiety, relationships, trauma, bereavement and grief, anger, addiction, life stressors/transitions, and sexuality, and other mental health problems. It has shown efficacy in treating individual clients, groups (for example, work colleagues, and families).

Addiction is very common and there are various reasons that people become addicted to things. Addiction can be chemical, for instance alcohol addiction. Or it can be psychological and behavioural, for example shopping-addiction, internet-addiction, or porn-addiction. In fact, people can become addicted to almost anything. But help is available.
Life is challenging, so it’s normal to feel low at times. If however, you’re feeling sad, apathetic, and hopeless for a prolonged period, you may be depressed, and this impacts functioning. And although depression is a natural response to difficulties, it can be treated.
Life involves suffering but we are not taught this. Instead we are taught that we should strive for happiness. But this kind of thinking does us a disservice, we become vulnerable to the inevitable trials of human existence, and feel ill-equipped to handle life challenges. But what if internal crises could be better managed?
LGBTIQ+ is an acronym denoting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, queer or questioning community. The sense of support and belonging that many experience within this community can provide relief and affirmation, which are much needed due to the difficulties often faced.
We experience many transitions throughout our lives, some are expected and predictable, whereas others can be sudden and shocking, making us feel a loss of control, even impacting our mental health and wellbeing. But there are ways to navigate the process of change.
Relationships can be tricky at the best of times, and it’s normal to go through difficulties. But relationship counselling is available to help you navigate the challenges and enjoy a more meaningful connection with your significant other.
