Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

IPT is an evidence-based, highly structured, and time-limited form of psychotherapy (talk therapy) designed to treat mood disorders and depressive symptoms. The main focus of IPT is to enhance the quality of social functioning and interpersonal relationships to improve mood. IPT pays particular attention to four key areas and provides strategies to resolve difficulties within them.

What Is Interpersonal Psychotherapy?

IPT strategies concentrate on four problematic relational areas: grief, interpersonal role disputes, role transitions, and interpersonal deficits. IPT therapy aims to help individuals communicate better with others and focus on difficulties that contribute to depression, or other mood disorders.

There are various ways in which interpersonal communication occurs, these are verbal, listening, written, and non-verbal communication. IPT attempts to help individuals change challenging interpersonal behaviours that might be contributing to their distress. IPT is derived from psychodynamic therapy, however it is not considered a psychodynamic therapy, rather it takes an explicit biopsychosocial focus.

About Interpersonal Therapy At Phinity Therapy

IPT therapy sessions can include various techniques, for example role-playing. This helps individuals notice and adjust the way they relate to others and their world.

Our IPT therapists will want to help you to understand the most important relational problems for you, so you can be supported toward the changes that will benefit, highlighting the adaptive element of IPT.

IPT is time-limited (acutely, lasting between 8 -16 sessions). IPT focuses on three phases: beginning, middle, and end. IPT can also be used in a maintenance form, lasting up to three years. We recommend sessions occur weekly, on the same day and time each week.

Mental Health Issues

We are proud to connect you with highly experienced practitioners who can help with almost any psychological issue.

Abandonment Anxiety

We have all likely experienced abandonment fears at least once in our lives.  For some who have experienced loss and trauma, this kind of anxiety can become chronic, bringing challenges in functioning, especially in social and relational contexts. But what exactly is abandonment anxiety?

Anger
Bereavement

Bereavement is a time and state of mourning and grief when we experience deep loss.  It is a natural, inevitable, and often very painful part of life, which occurs in response to the deprivation of someone or something.  When we process loss, we experience grief on multiple levels, including mentally, physically, socially, and emotionally. Emotional responses include anxiety, guilt, anger, sadness, and despair.

Depression

Life is challenging, so it’s normal to feel low at times.  If however, you’re feeling sad, apathetic, and hopeless for a prolonged period, you may be depressed, and this impacts functioning.  And although depression is a natural response to difficulties, it can be treated.

Low Self-Esteem

Some might say that at the heart of most therapeutic issues is low self-esteem (LSE).  LSE seems to impact most people, even those who might appear confident.  But what is it exactly, and why does it affect so many people?

Workplace Stress

At some point it’s normal to experience stress at work.  Stress happens when we feel stretched beyond our capacities, and today this is increasingly common due to compromised work-life balance.  In today’s fast-paced lives, we exert pressures that can even be self-imposed, leading to burnout.  There are also other reasons for workplace stress.  Read on to learn more…
