You may have heard about integrative therapy or counselling. In a nutshell, what works for one person may not work for another. So integrative therapy integrates more than one therapeutic approach, or framework in order to tailor therapy for individual needs.
Just as each person is different, so too are their needs, and this is perhaps most true when it comes to our therapeutic needs.
An integrative therapist will be trained in more than one psychological approach or modality which means they are able to suggest what they deem the most useful for a particular client, or utilise multiple ways of working, making therapy almost as unique as the client themselves.
An integrative therapist will usually mainly practice one or two models, and have good working knowledge of one or two additional approaches. This can be incredibly useful for clients who require different approaches at different times in therapy, or for different problems and goals.
At Phinity almost all of our therapists have an integrative approach. This means that you may experience some Person-Centred Therapy (PTC) which is experiential and based in the here-and-now. PCT views you and your therapist as equals, rather than as expert-client because your therapist is the expert in respect of their training, and you are the expert of you. PTC aims to help individuals actualise, and move toward their full potential. Your therapist will be empathic, honest, and accepting of you.
Alongside this approach, our therapists may draw on psychodynamic psychotherapy. This means that at times the focus will not be in the here-and-now, but rather on the then-and-there, the past. This may help you to understand the origin of some of your present patterns and problems. This brings about self-awareness and because there is a focus on the subconscious, that is the part of you that is normally inaccessible to your conscious mind, you can achieve insight and understanding, which can help you to change what is not serving you, or come to resolution and move toward healing.
Your Phinity therapist may also integrate some techniques from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which can help you take a pragmatic approach to problems, in the present. The focus is on identifying your thoughts, bodily and emotional feelings, and behaviours, to notice what is going on in an explicit way and understand what can be altered for helpful change. Your therapist may use just two approaches, or all three, or may draw on other modalities they’re trained in. We recommend weekly therapy at the same time and on the same day each week.

Bereavement is a time and state of mourning and grief when we experience deep loss. It is a natural, inevitable, and often very painful part of life, which occurs in response to the deprivation of someone or something. When we process loss, we experience grief on multiple levels, including mentally, physically, socially, and emotionally. Emotional responses include anxiety, guilt, anger, sadness, and despair.
Life is challenging, so it’s normal to feel low at times. If however, you’re feeling sad, apathetic, and hopeless for a prolonged period, you may be depressed, and this impacts functioning. And although depression is a natural response to difficulties, it can be treated.
Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress which is experienced by everyone at some time or another. However when anxiety becomes frequent and intense, this might be indicative of generalised anxiety disorder (GAD). If this sounds like you, read on to learn more.
Some might say that at the heart of most therapeutic issues is low self-esteem (LSE). LSE seems to impact most people, even those who might appear confident. But what is it exactly, and why does it affect so many people?
