As with adults, sometimes children struggle with their mental health and as any good parent would do, trying to understand your child and contain their disturbances by yourself will be challenging without expert help and insight.
A child psychologist may be able to help your child process and understand their difficulties, and better manage how they feel.
At Phinity Birmingham we understand that all children experience their lives differently so we aim to get to know your child and their difficulties, as experienced by them. This means our approach is individualised and tailored to your child and their needs.
Our child psychologist may invite you and other family members to a session when appropriate. We work with children of all ages and aim to understand what has caused the issues that your child is experiencing, and how we might best work with them to process, understand, and accept their feelings as valid.
We offer a nurturing and healing space, one in which your child can feel safe. Through the therapeutic process, your child can learn how to better regulate their feelings, become more confident, and experience improved relationships. Our therapists work in various ways, from play therapy, to family therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, and parental guidance.
For consistency and maximum benefit, we recommend weekly sessions, which take place at the same day and time each week, and last 50 minutes.
Phinity’s child psychologists are trained in attachment theory and child development and use their specialised knowledge as they work collaboratively with your child. This means they will attempt to understand the difficulties experienced by your child and work with them to facilitate learning around how best to cope and manage, but more importantly, how to prevent and resolve emotional issues that have become problematic in other ways.
We also like to include parents throughout the planning of therapeutic treatment, this means we will meet with you from time to time to discuss progress, and any present concerns. Through assessment, behavioural observations, play, and discussion with your child, we can learn what your child may be struggling with and help them to navigate their difficulties.
Your child may be feeling anxious, angry, depressed, tearful, or they may have issues with self-esteem, feeling excluded and unaccepted, suffered trauma, for example, grief and loss.
These feelings could have resulted from family problems, or problems at school, like bullying, and can result in communication problems, sleep issue, bed-wetting, or behavioural problems, like tantrums, eating concerns, withdrawal, and self-harm.
Child psychology can offer specialised support to a struggling child, helping them to work through their difficulties, rather than suffer.

Learning can be a wonderful experience, but it can also involve academic pressure and stress. Healthy stress levels can motivate us to do well, indeed many people do well under a little pressure. However for others, academia can bring about a feeling of overwhelm which can feel unmanageable. This can have consequences for our ability to achieve goals, and for our mental health, leading to anxiety and depression.
