What Is Autism Support For Children?

Autism support for children at Phinity Birmingham aims to help children who experience autism, manage their symptoms, wherever they lie on the autism spectrum, whether they experience mild or severe autism, or Asperger’s.

The experience of autism will be different for each child, and it can sometimes be different for girls, compared with boys. Autism support will help your child to experience their symptoms in less disruptive ways, to help them improve socialising, and their abilities to communicate and interact with others.

They may be limited in ways, for example, not having many hobbies or interests and feeling the need to repeat behaviours.  All of these things contribute to their overall wellbeing and experience of life. Autism support for children aims to help your child build their world, such that they can take enjoyment and feel included.

About Autism Support for Children At Phinity Birmingham

At this time, we do not test for autism, however we can help support your child therapeutically if they have a diagnosis.

For example, we offer psychological treatment for autism in the form of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). This entails understanding your child’s thoughts and feelings, and how these impact their behaviour and overall wellbeing. This will also enlighten to areas which may benefit from the attention.  For example, communication skills, social interaction skills, imaginative play skills, and academic skills. The aim is to help your child develop their strengths and talents.

It is about helping your child live with autism in the best way possible, by gaining skills, and confidence as they progress through life. Your child can learn to live a happier life.  We recommend weekly therapy sessions, which last 50 minutes.

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa, also known as anorexia, is an eating disorder that can result in health problems, and even death.  It’s an intense focus on fears of becoming fat.  Such that it causes individuals to starve themselves, sometimes exercising excessively and losing weight because they mistakenly believe they are fat.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that is sometimes referred to as hyperkinetic disorder.  It is less diagnosed in women than men, and around 3-5% of children and 2% of adults are thought to be impacted by it.  In the UK, ADHD only became recognised as a valid condition in 2000 when the National Institute of Clinical Excellence released their report on the condition.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that occurs due to differences in the brain, otherwise known as neurodiversity.  Neurodivergent people who are ‘on the spectrum’ will often experience problems with social communication and interaction.  Neurotypical people (that is, those who do not have an ASD) may find it difficult to understand the behaviours of those affected by autism.

Childhood Trauma

You might have experienced events in childhood that were disturbing and deeply distressing, causing you to feel helpless and unsafe.  These events can be traumatic, impacting a person’s sense of self and their ability to experience a full range of emotions.  This trauma may remain unprocessed, impacting adult life.  But there are ways to work through childhood trauma.
